El tragafuegos y malabarista
de la playa tenía la multitud pegada
hasta que los muchachos encendieron
fuegos artificiales que explotaron
centelleando sobre todos.
Nada podía desviar
más rápido a la multitud
que los fuegos artificiales
retumbando y lloviendo chispas
sobre la tierra. Yo no
intenté leer un poema
sobre la pasión que estalla
como un géiser.
Yo no
tenía micrófono,
ni público,
ni fuegos artificiales.
CATCHING FIRE
Indran Amirthanayagam
The fire-eater and twirler
had the beach crowd glued
until a few boys lit
fireworks that exploded
shimmering over everybody.
Nothing could divert
the crowd faster
than fireworks
booming and sprinkling
over earth. I did not
try to read a poem
about passion bursting
like a geyser.
I did not
have a microphone,
or audience,
or fireworks.
